Runway, a company peddling AI-powered video generation, is literally bribing filmmakers with up to $5 million and more in “service credits” to use their crap software. Because, allegedly, filmmakers are too skeptical to use AI in the first place. Who would’ve thought?
To distract from the fact that nobody actually wants to use AI in filmmaking, Runway is launching a Hundred Film Fund, because $5 million isn’t already a paltry sum to get filmmakers to suck it up. The cash award is supposedly to fund 100 original films that showcase the company’s AI “magic.” Yeah, magic. Because that’s exactly what AI-generated content has been so far – absolute sorcery.
Runway’s “generative video model” is supposedly versatile enough to be used for any type of film or video project, because… well, who wouldn’t want to use AI for a music video, for instance? It’s not like that’s already the domain of vapid content creators. And God forbid anyone tries to create actual art with this garbage. Oh wait, Runway already has advisors like Tribeca film festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal and will.i.am to make sure that doesn’t happen.
But hey, don’t worry about the funding being uneven or, gasp, wasted on utter trash. Runway doesn’t care about artistic integrity; they just want their product used, regardless of the outcome. So go ahead, filmmakers, suck up the cash and puke out some half-baked AI-generated garbage, and maybe, just maybe, Runway will claim victory and continue peddling their snake oil.
By the way, who came up with the “don’t worry, it won’t assert ownership or control” clause? The AI overlords? Runway is basically saying, “Hey, we don’t care about your artistic freedom; just use our shoddy software, and we’ll let you call the shots… on us.”
