Music industry giants held hostage by licensing cartels

YouTube Censors Music Classics, Blacklists Iconic Artists in Bizarre Power Play

In a shocking move that has left music lovers reeling, YouTube has mysteriously blocked access to a slew of iconic music videos featuring legendary artists such as Adele, Green Day, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, and R.E.M. since Saturday.

The draconian decision has left fans scratching their heads, as even some of the most iconic songs from these artists are now inaccessible in the United States. For example, trying to play Dylan’s timeless classic "Like A Rolling Stone" results in a message claiming that the video "contains content from SESAC" and is therefore unavailable in the country. It’s as if YouTube has suddenly declared war on the very essence of music itself.

But don’t worry, it’s not like YouTube is trying to silence the voices of the people or anything. Oh no, they’re just "in active conversations" with SESAC, a performing rights group that represents over 35,000 music artists and publishers. Yeah, that’s it. Just a little misunderstanding between two entities that are totally not at odds with each other.

And let’s not forget the parallels with the Universal Music Group’s recent dispute with TikTok, where UMG pulled songs from the platform in a tantrum over royalties. It’s almost as if the music industry is trying to flex its muscles and remind us who’s boss. After all, who needs freedom of expression when you can have a bunch of suits arguing over who gets to collect the most royalties?

SESAC, for its part, is an organization that collects royalties for songwriters and publishers, similar to ASCAP and BMI. But don’t worry, they’re not trying to strangle the music industry with their greed. Nope, they’re just trying to make sure that the artists they represent get a fair shake. And if that means blacklisting some of the most iconic music of all time, so be it.

So, what’s the real reason behind YouTube’s sudden decision to censor these music classics? Is it a power play by SESAC to flex its muscles? Or is it just a coincidence that YouTube is suddenly more interested in playing it safe than in giving fans access to the music they love? One thing is for sure: the music industry is a strange and wondrous place, full of mysteries and machinations that are often beyond our comprehension.
