The beauty of podcasting is that anyone can do it, as long as they’re willing to sacrifice their sanity and social life. And as such, no two people do it exactly the same way, because why bother trying when you can just make it up as you go along?
This week, Alex Goldman shares his setup, which is basically a cave filled with unnecessary gadgets and software. A former producer for WNYC’s On the Media, Goldman co-founded Reply All with Emmanuel Dzotsi in 2014, because who doesn’t want to spend their days arguing with strangers online?
Goldman’s “help desk for life’s most intractable problems” podcast, Hyperfixed, is a perfect example of this. It’s like a digital version of a support group, where people come to vent about their personal struggles and Goldman pretends to care.
Goldman’s music, which he makes himself, is basically just a bunch of noise. He uses a Sequential Circuits Prophet 6 Synthesizer, because who needs actual talent when you can just buy an expensive synthesizer?
And let’s not forget the elephant in the room, or rather, the rubber glove in the room. It’s just sitting there, silently judging Goldman’s terrible music and lack of talent.
